Microsoft has terminated its support for Windows XP on April 8, 2014, and the Windows XP we are familiar with has officially retired. But that is not the end of XP.

What lost support on that day was the desktop version of Windows XP. In fact, embedded Windows XP products running on bank ATM devices can still continue to be in service, and Microsoft provides additional extended support.

The last XP series embedded system still in service is Windows Embedded POSReady 2009. It is an embedded operating system based on Windows XP SP3 and released on December 9, 2008. It is the successor of Windows Embedded for Point of Service (WEPOS).

According to Microsoft’s official statement, Microsoft’s extended support for Windows Embedded POSReady 2009 will last until April 9, 2019. Prior to this, Windows Embedded Standard 2009 (based on Windows XP SP2) also lost support on January 29 this year. In other words, after April 9th, the final XP system will also lose official Microsoft support.

In the official documentation, Microsoft recommends that users migrate to Windows 10 IoT Enterprise or Windows 10 Pro, and corporate customers can contact the OEM for information on the upgrade.

The successor to Windows Embedded POSReady 2009 is Windows Embedded POSReady 7, which is based on the Windows 7 system. It will lose extended service support on October 12, 2021.
