The iOS 14.5 update recalibrates battery health reporting on the iPhone 11 series.

The next big update for Apple’s iPhone, iOS 14.5 or iOS 15 is expected later this year. Most of the interest will be in new features like new emoji and shortcut actions, controller support, and more, but the update will also bring significant fixes to the previous iPhone 11 series. iOS 14.5 allows users to recalibrate battery health reporting on iPhone 11 series, potentially diagnosing the battery performance of these devices. On the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max, users have reported unexpected battery drain behavior and maximum performance degradation. According to Apple’s support page (via MacRumors), this inaccurate battery health report doesn’t reflect the actual battery health issue, but if recalibration is not successful via iOS 14.5, Apple offers a free battery replacement. When iOS 14.5 releases this spring (if you can’t wait, it’s available in beta now), iPhone 11 series users can readjust the maximum battery capacity and peak performance features in the battery health reporting system. The maximum battery capacity is determined using a series of algorithms and measurements performed during use, and these algorithms have been updated over time to provide more accurate estimates. Battery Status Reporting While the system is being recalibrated, users will see a message in Settings> Battery> Battery Status. This process takes several weeks as recalibration takes place during regular charging cycles. When the calibration process is complete, the recalibration message is removed. This process can check if the battery condition is significantly degraded and display a battery service message. And, according to Apple, in a few cases recalibration fails and a new battery service message appears. In such cases, Apple will replace the battery free of charge to restore full performance and capacity. Apple does not indicate that this message indicates a safety issue with the battery, but when this message appears, it reassures users that more noticeable battery and performance issues may occur.
