The American firm has confirmed that there will be no new security update for its free antivirus.

Microsoft Security Essentials is a free antivirus program, launched in 2009 and intended for personal computers. Successor of Windows Live Care, it will have rendered many services for the users of a PC running Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7. And it is at the same time that the disappearance of W7 that MSE will bow out, the January 14, 2020.

Windows 7 and MSE support will stop at the same time

The American firm has indeed indicated that it does not plan to distribute security updates for the Microsoft Security Essentials program integrated into Windows 7, and this as soon as the operating system has switched from life to death in a few days .

As a reminder, Windows 7 support will expire on January 14, 2020. As the company confirms, security updates for the operating system will no longer arrive. “Your Windows 7 computer will no longer be protected by MSE after January 14, 2020. MSE is unique to Windows 7 and follows the same lifecycle dates for support,” Microsoft explains.

Microsoft pushes users to switch to Windows 10

The problem is that Windows 7 remains very popular, and still used by many people. The operating system market share born in 2009 is still estimated at 30% today. These are all users who will be deprived of security updates and who will be exposed to cyber threats.

Knowing that Microsoft is forcing to switch users to Windows 10, it is unlikely or even impossible for the company to reverse its decision and further extend the support for the security tool. “We recommend that you upgrade to a Windows 10 PC to continue receiving security updates from Microsoft,” says company support.

Windows 7 diehards will quickly see alerts appear on their screen inviting them to switch from W7 to W10.
