Qualcomm’s next-generation flagship SoC supports AV1 video codec

It is known that Qualcomm will provide AV1 video codec starting with its next-generation flagship SoC (System-on-Chip).

According to the latest report, Qualcomm will support AV1 decoding from the flagship chipset ‘SM8550’ in 2023. Considering that the current Snapdragon 8 first-generation SoC model number is SM8450, the SM8550 chipset is estimated to be the second-generation Snapdragon 8, foreign media reported.

AV1 video codec is a next-generation codec that improves the compression rate by more than 50% compared to the general H2.64, and improves by more than 20% compared to the VP9, ​​which is widely used today. Already adopted by YouTube and Netflix.

Samsung Electronics supports AV1 decoding from the flagship Exynos 2100 chipset.
